Hot Tubs After Dark: Let Lighting Transform Your Spa Space

One of the biggest advantages to owning a private hot tub is that you’re free to sink down into your relaxing spa any time you want—even after the sun goes down. Whether you’re playing a few post-dinner family spa games, hosting your own hot tub party, or simply relishing in a little starlit relaxation for Mom and Dad, hot tubs only get better after dark.

Your hot tub needs no help heating up after the sun goes down, true, but it’s hard to enjoy your piping spa when you can’t see a hand in front of your face. You may have all the necessary spa accessories for daytime usage, but those oh-so-essential hot tub covers, chemicals and filters won’t help you any when it’s pitch black out. There’s one more accessory you need to add to your collection: lighting.

Interior Hot Tub Lighting

Hands-down, the prettiest lighting option for your hot tub is in-spa lighting. In-spa lighting means your spa is lit from its internal structure, eliminating the need for extra exterior lighting. In-spa lighting lends your spa a little romantic ambiance; it’s the perfect lighting if you intend on primarily using your spa for relaxation. Unlike harsh light bulbs, in-spa lighting doesn’t distract relaxation by creating a glare on the water. It’s ideal for stargazing or for taking advantage of natural hot tub therapeutic benefits.

Lighting Your Family Hot Tub Parties

Relaxation benefits aren’t the only advantages of owning hot tubs and swim spas. Spa entertaining couldn’t be easier—just whip off those hot tub covers and let your guests jump in your steaming private spa. Light up that spa party in style with some fun, party-themed lighting.

Underwater light shows are hugely popular with kids; they’re the ideal way to bring a little extra fun to family spa time. These colorful, moving light displays can also add a disco-like atmosphere to your hot tub games and parties.

At Night, Safety Comes First

When most people think of “hot tub safety,” they think of changing hot tub filters and moderating hot tub chemicals. Slick surfaces and drowning risks mean proper lighting is every bit as important as caring for your spa. Motion-detector lights can help you illuminate your hot tub area when you’re ready to get in and out, without disturbing your spa relaxation time.

Transform Your Spa Area

Whether you string up some party lanterns or spring for an underwater light show, lighting is the perfect way to transform your spa area into something brand new. Tiki lanterns for an island paradise, Christmas lights for a snowy winter wonderland, candles for a romantic evening, light shows for your beach-themed hot tub parties—your spa space is only as limited as your imagination.

When we first introduced our hot tub wireless control system, OnSpa™, the typical reaction was….WHY? How hard is it to push the button?.
Well recently we rolled out a feature of this system that helps people ‘get it’. The app platform enabled our engineers to develop an easy phone interface that lets hot tub owners control what time of day their hot tub uses electricity. This is extremely valuable in areas where electrical utility costs change throughout the day. This is only the beginning. The wireless app platform and smart phone hardware will enable us to create features that hot tub shoppers really appreciate……we are already hearing from our customers that being able to crank the temperature up and jets on from inside the house before they go outside is a huge hit. And they also just like saying “OnSpa“.

Whether you suffer from debilitating Rheumatoid Arthritis or more minor aches and pains associated with aging and physical activities, a hot tub may provide you with the relief you need to make it through another day. Muscle and joint pain, carpel tunnel, and more serious conditions like RA often react favorably to warm water and the buoyancy provided by hot tubs. Spa health benefits go beyond relaxing the muscles, providing relief and a safe environment to stretch muscles and joints.

Easing the Pain of the Bane of Arthritis

Those who suffer from arthritis know how painful the condition is. Swollen and inflamed joints make simple tasks difficult. Luckily there are homeopathic remedies that can provide some relief to even the most severe symptoms. In the case of arthritis, hot tub therapeutic benefits include buoyancy to remove the stress placed on already painful joints, while the massage action of jets provides pain relief. Coupled with traditional therapy, hot tubs or swim spas may be used to deal with this difficult disease.

No More Aches, No More Pains

Even those who do not suffer from a diagnosed medical issue often have aches and pains in their joints and muscles. Exercise, work, or even just life often leave our bodies sore, making it difficult to relax and sleep. A short soak in a hot tub helps work out knots, kinks, and other body pains. The science is simple. Increased circulation causes the muscles to relax – providing you with relief. Coupled with the ability to provide a more restful night’s sleep, the hot tub may very well be the answer to many of your aches and pains.

Scented candles, relaxing music and a hot tub full of big scented bubbles, with a glass of a nicely blended beverage, all fit the makings of a perfect night of relaxation for mom. Or is it all a dream?

For some moms, it may be a distant memory of the times when she was able to take a nice, long hot spa bath without interruption. Work responsibilities, children, home duties, etc. are all vying for mom’s attention, sometimes all at the same time. Does that sound familiar? A longed-for dream it may very well be, but the time comes when mom has to shift things around and make her needs a priority.

The hot tub must win!

Pampering: A Required Necessity

Yes, as a mom, you need to take the time to relax and pamper yourself on more than just an “as-needed” basis. Make it a regular habit. Make it a recurring scheduled appointment. And, to make your mom’s night even more fun and one to look forward to, invite your other tired mom friends over to enjoy a girl’s night spa party.

As a busy mom, you can certainly appreciate the time for relaxation for mom. Those hot tub therapeutic benefits help make you a better mom, wife, employee and person. Not only is it mommy time, but you also get to do invigorating facials and actually finish a mani/pedi without being interrupted!

Creating a Fun Night

To have a really spectacular mom’s night in, simply plan ahead so everyone can enjoy the fun and no detail is left out. Here are some tips on the hosting the perfect spa party:

The time spent in swim spas and hot tubs is more fun with a glass of something tasty to drink.

Have towels, lotions and all other hot tub and spa accessories available and accessible for your guests.

Hot tubs can deplete energy levels, so provide a light fare for them to enjoy while they’re basking. This can be something as simple as cheese and crackers with fruit or light sandwiches.

The ultimate goal of mom’s night in is to make sure that everyone is relaxed, smiling and rejuvenated at the end of the party. Make it a point to set a date for the next facial or swim spas party. Everyone will be looking forward to it, expecting a great time.

Winter is coming—guess it’s time to close down the hot tub for the season.

Wait! Stop! Don’t touch that tub!

Winter is one of the absolute best times of year to use your spa; there’s no reason to close down your spa. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to keep warm while enjoying the great outdoors. What better way to watch the snow fall than from the warm waters of a cozy hot tub or swim spa?

Well, I only use my spa for entertaining, and barbecue season is long over…

Who says you can’t entertain in the winter months? In fact, owning a spa is one of the only ways to hold an outdoor party in the winter. Your guests won’t care that it’s four degrees outside when they’re neck-deep in 104-degree water.

Stop prematurely draining those spas and get a little creative with your winter entertaining this year. Here are three different ways to make the most of spa entertaining during the winter months.

Romantic Snowy Evening for Two

Reenact “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” by cooking up a little romance of your own on a snowy evening. Start with a slow-roasted home-cooked meal, served over candlelight (don’t forget homemade dessert!). Then cozy up together in the hot tub and enjoy your own winter wonderland under the stars. End your snowy romantic evening with a glass of wine in front of the fireplace.

Embrace being snowed in with the one you love. No shoveling the walk, no braving winter roads—you’ll have a five-star date night without ever having to leave the house.

Girl’s Night In

Little black dresses don’t fare too well when the temperatures drop below 30 degrees. Forgo the heels without forgoing the cocktails by having a girl’s night in—it’s time for a ladies-only spa party. Instruct everyone to pack swimsuits along with their warmest pajamas and gossip the night away in the spa. When it’s time to get out, dry off and cozy up in those pajamas—it’s time for a night of chick flicks, sleepover-style.

Family Spa Time in the Snow

Who says hot tubs or swim spas are just for grown-ups? After a long day of sledding, snowball fights and snowmen-making, nothing warms up cold noses and toes like a dip in the family spa. Surprise your family by bringing out a tray stacked with heaping hot chocolate mugs—don’t forget the whipped cream and marshmallows!

There’s no need to risk frostbite in order to enjoy your own private winter wonderland. Everything else may be frozen, but you’ll stay toasty warm in the hot tub while enjoying the new fallen snow with the ones you love.

With our lives expanding on a daily basis, getting the family together and away from work, school, activities, and electronics is more important than ever. Family hot tub parties are a great way to spend time together that the kids won’t find boring – it will just be plain ol’ fun!

It Starts With the Hot Tub and Ends With Fun

Hot tubs in the backyard are an ideal gathering place for the family. Even young children will enjoy some time in the tub with supervision. Check the water temperature carefully, add in some fun family spa games and bring back a simpler time when spending the evening with the family was exciting and fun. The little ones will enjoy floating spa animals like ducks, penguins, and whales. Teenagers will love a floating table and plastic cards for an evening of poker or rummy. Mom and dad will enjoy it all.

Kick Up the Heat a Notch – Figuratively Speaking

Many times, kids just aren’t interested in an evening with mom and dad – even if it does involve a hot tub. This is especially true with tween and teenagers, so taking it up a notch is important. Families with teenagers should absolutely add in a spa radio for some tunes. Snacks and soda are another requirement – especially for growing teenagers. Make an evening of it with a cook-out and games or a movie.

Keeping’ It Real, Real Safe

Remember that hot tubs are fun and safe, but only when treated with respect. Make sure that children are always supervised. If toddlers are being introduced to the hot tub, adjust the heat settings accordingly, which doctors recommend to be between 90 and 100 degrees. Spa accessories are a fun addition to the tub, but remember to use them as recommended and to remove them from the spa once the party ends.

Quality time with the family can also be fun time. Enjoy an afternoon or evening with the kids in the comfort of your family spa. Let go of the stress of every day life and reconnect the family – if only for a few hours.

There is nothing better than sliding into a piping hot hot tub. From a few minutes alone, relaxing and easing tired and sore muscles, to fun family hot tub parties, hot tubs are often the perfect accessory to any home. Easier to maintain than a full-sized pool, spas provide relaxation, health benefits, and the ideal environment for entertaining. The fun begins with one decision – which of the many different sized home and garden spas is right for your particular home?

Size Matters

Hot tubs can be an intimate setting for two or spacious enough for an entire family. While common sizes include seating for five to seven people, there are multiple choices available. A two person spa is perfect for those who want to experience a little bit of quiet by themselves or with someone special.

Larger families, or those who plan to use their hot tub for entertaining, can select a 6 or 8 person model. For those interested in an even ‘bigger’ experience, swim spas provide additional room with many of the comforts of a traditional spa.

When selecting the size of your particular tub, keep in mind a few factors. First is seating – remember that it is often best to plan for guests and select a model with a few extra seats. The second thing to consider is water capacity. On average, hot tubs should hold about 75 gallons of water for each person using it, making it easy to select an appropriate size.

Going Beyond Size to the Setting

Almost as important as the size of the hot tub is the setting. Take the time to consider where the tub will be placed, remembering that decks and masonry will have weight limitations. Once you have considered any weight issues, turn to the environment for help. Are there pathways, landscaping, and lighting features available? Will they support a larger spa or just a small one?

Remember to also take into consideration the extra space you’ll need for spa accessories, steps, caddies, and towel holders. All of these items will change your available space and impact the overall size of your swim spa or hot tub.

Hot tubs are a beautiful addition to the home, providing health benefits, fun, and relaxation. Before you dive in, take the time to carefully consider what size hot tub will fit best with your needs and your particular yard. Choosing the right size tub will make all the difference.
